From here we will fully explore the summits and snowy landscape of the Vallée de la Clarée, also known as Val Claret. It is a stunningly beautiful area with many excellent snowshoeing routes, and is renowned for having some of the best snow cover in the Southern Alps - all this makes it one of the best destinations in the French Alps for snowshoeing.

What to expect

While this is a great introductory trip for those new to snowshoeing, it is also good for intermediate walkers and hikers who like longer days. The itinerary is flexible so for those looking for a more relaxed holiday there are opportunities to choose to do a half-day, or take a full day off to rest, or explore Nevache.

Cloud 9 will provide all the specialist kit you need, As well as snowshoes and poles we will also provide safety equipment including a snow shovel, avalanche probe and transceiver, and will show you how to use them.

Day 2 - Col des Thures

On our first day we will find our feet and get a feel for the area by tackling a nearby col. Above the village of Nevache we take a valley trail, which leads us along a gorge with dramatic spires of rock rising above the pine trees. We then climb above the treeline to the Col des Thures (2194m), sitting just above Lac Chavillon.

Ascent: 600m

Day 3 - Col de Buffère

Today is a great day, that starts with a steady climb up to a viewpoint at the Refuge Buffère. This is the perfect stop for a hot chocolate, and those wishing to take it easy can relax at the refuge, while the rest of the group head up to the Col de Buffère itself (2427m). We enjoy beautiful views out to the mountains of the Massif des Ecrins, and get a real sense of being in a remote and wild landscape.

Ascent: 400m to the refuge, and a further 900m to the col

Day 4 - Vallon de Creuzet

Today we will explore the pretty Creuzet area, with a lovely valley trail. The start point is Plamplinet, just a short drive from Nevache. It is a high valley that we enter below the Croix Carail, and follow up to an altitude of roughly 2277m.

Today we will set off for our night in the mountains. Our start point is Fontcouverte, from where we have a steady climb through the forest up to the clear ground below the Refuge du Chardonnet (2223m). After a well-earned refreshment stop at the refuge we then have a couple of options.  We can use the afternoon to explore the area beyond the refuge, or if we're feeling energetic there are various summits we can tackle. You can also opt to relax at the refuge and enjoy the sunshine if you prefer! Either way we will all meet back at the refuge for a night in the mountains, and a well-earned glass of wine!

We then descend and head back to our hotel in Nevache.
