Snowshoe Traverse of the Chablais

On this best-selling Snowshoe Traverse of the Chablais we take a fabulous journey through a winter wonderland of Alpine forests, pastures and snow-topped peaks. Snowshoeing is the perfect low-impact way to explore this pristine snowy landscape, as we make our way from the French village of Mégevette to Evian-les-Bains, on the shores of beautiful Lac Léman (Lake Geneva). The Chablais Alps are renowned for their excellent snowshoeing opportunities, with fabulous views of the Mont Blanc massif.

What to expect

On this trip we'll travel in style and at a moderate pace. We'll stay in comfortable hotels in Alpine villages on all 7 nights, enjoying traditional local food, wine and hospitality. There is full luggage support, so we can travel light with just daypacks, and our main bags will be waiting for us on arrival.

Each day we will aim to cover around 12-16 kilometres, with ascents between 800 and 1000 metres, so a reasonable level of fitness is required. No prior experience of snowshoeing is needed, however, as the techniques are relatively simple, and easy to learn. If you have any questions at all about whether this trip is right for you, just ask.

Snowshoe Traverse of the Chablais: Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Geneva and transfer to Mégevette

We offer a transfer for the group from Geneva Airport, normally at 17:30. Precise details will be provided nearer the time once we have everyone's flight details.  If you're not able to make the transfer or are travelling independently, we will all meet at the group hotel in Mégevette in the evening for a trip briefing, followed by dinner.

Accommodation: Hotel, dinner included

Luggage access

Day 2 - From Mégevette to Bellevaux or Hirmentaz

After we have put on our snowshoes for the first time and 'found our feet', we will start the first day of our trip with a traverse up to the Col de la Bray (1442m), passing through several hamlets on the way. We then climb to the Pointe des Jottis (1548m), and take in the fabulous views, before dropping back down to the pastures of la Bray. Our descent takes us past the frozen Lac de Vallon, and the snow-covered forests, to Chapelle Saint-Bruno. There is no accommodation here so we'll take a taxi to reach our hotel for tonight.

We then traverse through the tall pine trees to the Col de la Balme (1445m), and on to the Col de Seytrouset (1564m), where we enjoy spectacular views of the Dents du Midi. We descend to the Dranse de Morzine river, followed by a short climb to our hotel in Le Biot.

Passing beneath the Pointe de Cercle we reach the day's highest point at Montagne de Drouzin (1620m), then descend into the Abondance valley and the Alpages de Druges. We will spend the night in the charming village of Abondance.

A steady climb brings us to the ridge of Mont Chauffe at the Col de la Plagne (1546m), followed by a descent into the beautiful valley of Ubine, which is uninhabited in the winter. We pass underneath the north face of the Memises, on our descent to Thollon (937m). We are getting lower now so, depending on conditions, we may need to continue without snowshoes as we descend right down to Lac Léman itself. We will then take a transfer to Evian-les-Bains, a famous spa town on the shores of the lake, and the perfect end to our adventure.
