Lapland Cross Country Ski Traverse: Overview

If you haven’t skied in this winter wonderland before, Cloud 9 Adventure’s Lapland Traverse is an excellent introduction. On this tour you’ll experience three of Lapland’s most popular cross-country ski regions: You’ll get to know Finland’s biggest ski resort Levi; the lakeside village of Äkäslompolo; and Muonio near the Finnish-Swedish border. This town, with its pretty little chapel and pristine environment, is recognised by the World Health Organization for enjoying some of the cleanest air on earth. The terrain is often covered with frozen lakes, dense, snow-topped spruce forests and expansive swathes of the Arctic tundra that characterises this part of the world.

What to expect

After an initial three nights in the same hotel in Levi (heading out on day-long circuits), you’ll set off for your next base. You’ll therefore get to experience and relax in several different hotels, each serving delicious Finnish specialities and (it goes without saying) complete with sauna. With full luggage support you only need to carry a daysack while out on the tracks, so you’ll feel free and light to enjoy the skiing by day. Your main cases will await each evening. This trip is suitable for those with previous cross-country or Nordic skiing experience and the vast network of linked trails cater for both classic and skating style. A good knowledge of cross-country skiing techniques, particularly the snowplough for steeper descents, is needed. If you have any questions at all about whether this trip is right for you, just ask.

Lapland Cross Country Ski Traverse: Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Kittilä, transfer to Levi

Your trip begins at the hotel in Levi in the evening, where you’ll meet your fully-qualified guide for a trip briefing. There’ll be ample opportunity to ask any questions prior to a group dinner. There will be one single-timed group transfer from Kittila airport to Levi (it’s 20 minutes’ away) or you’re welcome to make your own way to the hotel. If you get in early, you might like to explore the village on foot or to make a few-hour taster trip out onto the trails.

Day 2 - Explore northern Levi

The region around northern Levi is quite typical of Lapland with gentle, rolling, snow-covered hills. Today will be an exploratory loop back to the same hotel for the evening, and your guide will set the route, time and distance to best suit the group and to help everyone find their feet. There are quaint chalets en route that are perfect refuelling stops for snacks and hot drinks throughout the day before heading back to the hotel for a sauna.

Day 3 - Discover southern Levi

After a filling breakfast we’ll head south to ski some new tracks and trails south of Levi. The terrain becomes slightly hillier compared to yesterday which brings with it more impressive and further-reaching views. In the evening we’ll return to the same hotel for dinner, a sauna and our third and final evening here.

Day 4 - Transfer to Äkäslompolo, circular skiing daytrip

We’ve now had a really good taste of Levi’s wintry delights so it’s time to head to Äkäslompolo, a real magnet for winter sports enthusiasts. We’ll get a 50-minute transfer from Levi, dressed for the piste so we’re ready to jump straight into our skis the other end of the 60km journey. There are two options for today. The first is to drive all the way to your hotel in Äkäslompolo and to take a cross-country daytrip from there. The second is to get dropped off en route to visit the Laino Ice Hotel and to ski on to Äkäslompolo from there.

Day 5 - Ski tour in the Ylläs region

Äkäslompolo is a striking destination and you’ll be impressed by its pristine natural environment. It’s one of Lapland’s main cross-country resorts and has over 360km of tracks, prepared for both classic and skating styles. The resort encompasses seven mountains including the mountain of Ylläs (718m). Your guide will devise a memorable daytrip, not forgetting to factor in some fabulous photo opportunities and stops at warm and welcoming ‘kotas’ for coffee and cake.

Day 6 - Transfer to Olos-Pallas National Park

After breakfast in our Äkäslompolo hotel, we’ll take a transfer north of around one hour to reach the renowned Olos-Pallas National Park. Everywhere you look there are frozen lakes, with mountain tundra in the distance. Your guide will devise a daytrip to show you the highlights of the region at a pace to suit the group.

Day 7 -  Jerisjärvi and the National Park

Pallas National Park is rumoured to have the purest air in Europe. Where better to escape the 9-5, the stress and the smog of our daily lives! We’ll set off into this squeaky clean, snowy wilderness for our final day of this memorable Lapland traverse. Marvel at the Arctic tundra and seemingly endless tracks before finally heading back for a final group meal and a sauna at the hotel.

Day 8 - Departure day: transfer from Pallas to Kittilä

Your trip ends this morning after breakfast. Cloud 9 Adventure will organise one single-timed group transfer for the 80km return trip to the Kittilä Airport. For those keen to stay on or with later flights, local adventures abound from dog sledding and snowmobiling to snowshoeing or fishing through a hole in a frozen lake...
