Engadin Ski Traverse Cross Country Ski: Overview

The Engadin Valley is well known for its stunning landscape of forests and frozen lakes, as well as its 280km of groomed tracks. The huge network of cross country trails means there's a wide variety of Nordic skiing, to suit skiers of every level. Please note that our Ski Traverse is aimed at Classic skiers rather than skaters, as both the Val Fex and the Roseg are open only to classic skiers. For those on private trips wishing to skate, let us know at the time of booking and we will adapt the itinerary accordingly.

What to expect

On this trip we will cover a distance of over 100km over the course of 5 days. The trails are groomed daily and offer relatively easy to moderate skiing but participants will need to have experience of cross country track skiing, and to have mastered a controlled snowplough for any steeper descents we might encounter. You will also need a good level of fitness, as we will ski for several hours each day. If you have any questions at all about whether this trip is right for you, just ask.

We will stay in local hotels with good facilities, and there is luggage delivery every day, so we will only need to carry our daypacks while skiing.

Engadin Ski Marathon Race Week

We are also running a special version of this trip to coincide with the famous Engadin Ski Marathon event. It includes race training and entry to the event itself. We will adapt our itinerary to incorporate training and exploring days, culminating in taking part in this epic ski race. Discover our Engadin Marathon Training Week here.

Engadin Ski Traverse Cross Country Ski: Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Zuoz

We will meet at the group hotel in Zuoz in the Engadin Valley.

Accommodation: Hotel, dinner included

Luggage access

Day 2 - Ski from Maloja to Val Fex

The beautiful 'hidden' valley of Val Fex is closed to most vehicles, which is great news for cross country skiers! Our day will be spent soaking up the stunning scenery at the foot of the Piz Chapütschin, as our route takes us through tiny villages and across tranquil unspoiled landscapes. There are only 3 hotels in this valley, and we will be lucky enough to spend a night in one of them.

Accommodation: Hotel, dinner included

Luggage access

Distance: 22km

Day 3 - Ski from Val Fex to Pontresina

Today we will follow the route of the Engadin Marathon as we make our way to Pontresina. As we ski through Silvaplana and St Moritz, we will be surrounded by the majestic mountain peaks, enjoying the scenery as we go. There will be plenty of opportunities for refreshment breaks, and if we make good time, we will also have the chance to explore the lovely mountain village of Pontresina.

Accommodation: Hotel, dinner included

Luggage access

Distance: 21km

Day 4 - Ski Val Roseg

Today we will explore Val Roseg. A steady 8km climb will take us to the fabulous restaurant at the foot of the glacier. The route options are different depending on whether you are skate skiing, and there are also options to extend the day. We spend another night in Pontresina.

Accommodation: Hotel, dinner included

Luggage access

Distance: 16km

Day 5 - Ski from Pontresina to Zuoz

Today we will tackle the second half of the marathon trail as we ski from Pontresina to Zuoz. Our trail follows the route of the Enn River, which meets the Danube at Passau before flowing on to the Black Sea, via Vienna and Budapest. Picturesque Zuoz is a fabulous example of a traditional Engadin village, with its cobblestones and ancient buildings.

Accommodation: Hotel, dinner included

Luggage access

Distance: 19km

Day 6 - Ski to Zernez

Today is a fitting way to end our trip, as we explore the 25km route between Zuoz and Zernez, often knows as the 'Wild Valley' or the 'White Valley'. The trail takes us past forests and woodland, and near the Rhaetian Railway's Albula-Bernina line, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our day finishes with a stunning descent into the Zernez National park. We should have plenty of time for a refreshment break, and even a trip to the Zernez Museum before taking the train back to Zuoz.
