Snowshoeing in Chamonix: Overview

The Chamonix Valley is a beautiful place to snowshoe, and our winter walks are open to all abilities.  You don't need to have previous snowshoeing experience but you'll need to be fit enough to walk uphill at a gentle pace.  It's a great way of exploring the winter scenery, and you'll be amazed how quickly you can leave the crowds behind and experience Chamonix's backcountry away from the ski lifts.

We can do half-day or full-day snowshoeing trips, every day from mid-December until end of April.  A half-day snowshoe walk can be relaxed or strenuous, whichever you prefer! We can tailor all our walks to your ability, so we can either do a family day-out for young kids, or if you're already fit and used to hill-walking, we can try one of the numerous snowshoe summits in the Chamonix region.

A full-day will allow you to explore further afield, and we often try to incorporate a summit so that we can enjoy some of the breathtaking scenery that Chamonix has to offer.

Our prices include transport in the Chamonix valley, and if we travel out of the valley we usually ask for a supplement to cover fuel. We will always agree this with you first.  We try to do trips without using the ski lifts, but sometimes the snow conditions might dictate that we need to use them.

When comparing our prices to other companies, please note that we include transport, snowshoes and avalanche safety equipment. If your group is over 5 people but you have your own transport, let us know as we can reduce the price accordingly.

Which Chamonix Snowshoe trip shall I book?

Half-day snowshoe hike- suitable for all abilities and tailored to your group. Whether you want to climb a summit, explore the forests, stop and take photos or do a strenuous work-out, we can tailor all of our trips accordingly. You do not need to have snowshoeing experience, and we can make the trip as strenuous or as gentle as you like. Suitable for families, individuals, or people wanting to give it a try.

Full-day snowshoe hikes - suitable for people who are used to hillwalking in the summer. We can go a little further afield to get higher up in the valley and experience some amazing views and perhaps a summit.

Chamonix snowshoe summits - we can organise a 2, 3 or 4 day trip doing various summits in the Mont Blanc region.

Moonlit snowshoe walk - experience an exciting snowshoe walk under the stars. We pick you up from your accommodation and book you a traditional mountain restaurant.

Snowshoeing in Chamonix: Sample Itinerary

Half-day snowshoe walk

Examples of half-day snowshoe walks include a loop above the village of Le Buet into the Bérard valley, le Chalet du Chenavier above Montroc, a trip up the Prarion summit in Les Houches, or a low-level snowshoe walk through the forests and hamlets of the valley.

Full-day snowshoe walk

Examples of full-day snowshoe walks include the wonderful Chalets de Loriaz or the Chalets de Chailloux, the Aiguillette des Posettes or the Aiguillette des Houches. If you would like to explore further afield, then there are plenty of fantastic options within a short drive of Chamonix.

One of our favourite snowshoe treks is the summit of the Tête de Sallaz in the Aravis, from which you have unbeatable views of Mont Blanc. Other day walks include Mont de L'Arpille in Switzerland, with a stunning view into the Rhone valley, a snowshoe hike up to the summit of the Petit Croisse Baulet above Megeve, or a delightful snowshoe hike up to the hamlet of Ayères, above the tiny resort of Plaine Joux.
