Chamonix Day Hikes

The Chamonix Valley is a truly beautiful place in which to hike. We offer a range of classic options or are equally happy to tailor a half day, full day or multi-day walking trip to meet your requirements. Our summer walks are open to all abilities and you don’t need to have previous trekking experience to book one. You just need to be fit enough to walk for a few hours, usually with several hundred metres up and down, and with occasionally rough-going underfoot. Trekking’s gentle pace is the perfect speed at which to explore the peaks and valleys of Chamonix in summer.

We always use top-notch accompagnateurs and internationally accredited guides, whether we’re going on a gentle wild flower walk, a trip up to a mountain lake and hut for lunch, or on a family day out with the children. A full-day will allow you to explore further afield, and we often try to incorporate a summit to enjoy Chamonix's breathtaking scenery.

If your group size is 4 people or less, then we include a pick-up and drop-off from your hotel to the start of the hike. If your group is 5 people or more, then we can either book additional minibus transfers, or we can use the valley's excellent transport system to reach the hiking. The choice is yours.

If you can’t see what you like below just contact us. Most of our hiking guides live in the Chamonix Valley year-round and so we really are experts in this world-class trekking region.

Which Chamonix Day Hike shall I book?

Half-day Chamonix Hike - suitable for all abilities and tailored to your group. Whether you want to climb a summit, explore the forests, stop and take photos or do a strenuous work-out, we can tailor all of our trips accordingly. You do not need to have trekking experience, and we can make the trip as strenuous or as gentle as you like. Suitable for families, individuals, or people wanting to give it a try.

Full-day Chamonix Hike - suitable for people who are used to hillwalking in the summer. We can go a little further afield to get higher up in the valley and to experience some amazing views and perhaps a summit.

Chamonix-based multi-day hikes - we can organise a 2, 3 or 4 day hiking trip based in the Chamonix valley to explore various routes and summits in the Mont Blanc region while you stay in town to enjoy evenings in Chamonix in the comfort of your hotel or chalet. Or you can incorporate a night or 2 in a mountain hut if you'd like to stay high in the mountains, or perhaps summit Mont Buet. We offer a 2 day guided or self-guided hut trips, and also 3 or 4 day hut tours such as the Tour des Aiguilles Rouges, Tour des Fiz, Tour du Pays du Mont Blanc, Tour des Dents du Midi or Tour des Muverans in Switzerland.

Chamonix Day Hikes: Sample Itineraries

Half-day or full-day guided hike to Lac Blanc

This gentle (family friendly) three-hour hike has little elevation yet over-delivers on the views. It starts atop the Index cable car above Flégère, and offers picture-perfect vistas with every step. The Lac Blanc is actually turquoise in summer rather than ‘blanc’ as its name would suggest. Dip in its glacial waters if you dare. From our path, we’ll see other terraced lakes leading halfway up the Aiguilles Rouges, and are soon rewarded with huge views including Aiguille du Tour, Aiguille du Chardonnet, Aiguille Verte, Drus, the Mer de Glace, the Jorasses and of course majestic Mont-Blanc itself. Chew over the day’s delights on the cable car back to Flégère.

This hike can also be done as a full-day route starting from Tré-le-Champ (via the ladders) or the Col des Montets via the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve and the delightful Lc des Chéserys.

Half-day guided hike along the Grand Balcon Sud

This is a terrific 2hr hike that’s really family friendly. It’s also perfect for those who want the views and the unforgettable Mont Blanc memories without over-exerting themselves. We’ll head up the Planpraz cable car to begin this linear hike along a relatively level balcony high above the town of Chamonix. We’ll hike through the pastures of the Glière valley and will pass refreshing springs and a multitude of flowers and blueberry bushes. The views that await us encompass the whole Mont Blanc range plus the Tour, Argentière and Mer de Glace glaciers. Cool down back at Planpraz, watching the paraponters soar from their take-off zone nearby before heading back to the valley.

Full-day guided hike to the Aiguillette des Houches

This looped day hike takes around 5 hrs. We’ll ascend from the grasslands of the wildlife-rich Carlaveyron Nature Reserve through rocky trails and spruce trees. Lunch on the terrace of the lovely Bel Lachat refuge (2,136m) is recommended, or we'll stop off for a picnic en route. The day’s goal is the Aiguillette des Houches for incredible views of Mont Blanc and the Bossons glacier. We'll return via a ridgeline with great views down the Servoz valley and past the Fiz rocks, crossing green pastures to complete our loop via the Merlet Forest.

Full-day guided hike to the Aiguillette des Posettes
This horseshoe-shaped hike takes around 3.5 hrs. and begins with a ride on the Charamillon chairlift to gain height. Once near the Col de Balme that marks the French-Swiss border, you’ll enjoy uninterrupted views of the valleys of Vallorcine, Rhone and Chamonix. Once up at the Aiguillette des Posettes itself, you’ll have a 360 panorama over Mont Blanc and the Trient, Tour and Argentière glaciers – with the Aiguille du Goûter, Mont Buet and Emosson dam also in sight. Return through the pastures of Balme, stocked with grazing Hérens cows to return via the Charamillon once more.

Full-day guided hike to Tré-les-Eaux

This challenging, waterfall-rich day hike is less well-known than many and is all the more enjoyable for it. It takes around 7-8 hours. We’ll weave through the village of La Poya and through forests and past waterfalls such as Eau de Bérard. Beyond the Alpine chalets of Les Granges we’ll reach Tré-les-Eaux. A zig-zagging trail then takes us steeply up and down into the broad coombe beneath Buet mountain and between narrow, rockier tree-lined sections. This is a ‘there and back’ hike that almost feels like a loop with very different views of the Argentière and Tour glaciers and the Grands Montets and Drus taking centre stage on the way home.
